The Threshold Institute (TTI) exists to help ideas with real potential cross the most critical point in their life cycle — the threshold between concept and impact.

Many promising ideas stall not because they lack merit, but because they are never evaluated, structured, or supported at the moment when it matters most. They remain interesting, but unrealised.

We focus on that moment — the threshold where something either stays an idea, or becomes real.

What We Do

The Threshold Institute is a cultivation house for ideas that are ready to move from insight to implementation.

We work across a wide range of domains, from digital products to complex physical technologies in energy, water, waste, and transport, applying a consistent methodology to determine which ideas deserve time, resources, and stewardship.

Ideas enter the Institute in two ways:

  • External ideas: brought to us by inventors, researchers, or partners seeking disciplined evaluation

  • Internal origination: where TTI identifies unmet needs and derives its own project concepts

Our role is not to chase every possibility, but to identify the ideas that are genuinely capable of becoming real enterprises.

Evaluation and the TI™ Score

All ideas are evaluated using a rapid first-pass assessment, including the Threshold Innovation (TI)™ Score, which asks three fundamental questions early:

  • Are we genuinely solving a real problem?

  • Is there a credible market for this solution?

  • Are we going to create meaningful value for the stakeholders of the idea?

For complex physical technologies — particularly in energy, water, waste, and transport — this assessment is supported by a rigorous proprietary evaluation process, designed to test technical feasibility, IP strength, financial valuation and market appeal.

Not every idea passes this threshold — and that discipline is intentional.

From Ideas to Projects

Ideas that pass the initial threshold become projects.

Projects are developed within TTI using the Institute’s core methodology:

  1. Cultivation – distinguishing signal from noise

  2. Attention – understanding context, constraints, and real conditions

  3. Threshold Definition – clarifying what “becoming real” actually means

  4. Crossing – building and testing a minimal, real-world form (MVP)

  5. Stewardship – deciding whether to refine, scale, pause, or retire responsibly

This methodology applies regardless of output — whether an app, a device, an information system, or a complex technical solution.

Special Purpose Vehicles (SPVs)

Projects that move toward commercialisation are structured as Special Purpose Vehicles (SPVs).

Each SPV:

  • is its own legal entity

  • is funded and commercialised independently

  • carries forward the same evaluation discipline and methodology

  • is managed by a project leader from The Threshold Institute. External innovators and advisers are part of Threshold’s ‘skunk team’ for each SPV. Development of the SPV for market readiness is fast paced and deliberately tough.

TTI is designed to host many SPVs over time, each addressing a distinct problem space, while benefiting from shared governance, experience, and stewardship.

Equity in each SPV is agreed transparently between:

  • inventors / innovators

  • commercial partners

  • and TTI itself

The objective is not extraction, but fair and sustainable value creation for all stakeholders.

Funding Model

TTI itself is independent and steward-led.

Funding comes from:

  • aligned patrons and private supporters

  • Australian and international grants

  • targeted project funding allocated to specific SPVs

Grant applications are made by TTI and, where awarded, allocated to the relevant SPV and TTI core.

This structure allows:

  • long-horizon work at the Institute level

  • focused commercial execution at the project level

Project Example: ‘‘ComingUpNext”

ComingUpNext is an information project developed within The Threshold Institute.

It applies the same methodology to an informational threshold rather than a physical one — addressing a simple but widespread human problem: people lose track of the things that bring colour and fun to their life.
